When the president of the United States turned to Mike Timlin on the White House lawn earlier this month and said it was nice to see someone from Midland, Texas, finally make something of himself, he only knew part of the story that took place in a baseball uniform.
Today, Paul Franz '88 is probably best known for two things--co-founding Powered, an Austin-based software company, and blowing by fellow runners while pushing a stroller filled to capacity with three of his four children.
If someone lasts 14 seasons in the big leagues, he must have something to offer. Clearly, Mike Timlin, Oldsmar, Fla., has been an effective reliever. But he has never been as detrimental to the mental health of batters as he was at the end of last season.
Mike Lade '88 is vice president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors; a member of the Alumni Self Study Implementation Steering Committee (ISC) after serving on the Self Study Commission; an ISC liaison to the Local Associations Task Force; and a member of the Houston Alumni Leadership Committee. Last year, he chaired the University's first-ever Houston Candlelight Service.
