Stephen Perz ’92 always knew that he wanted to study the social and behavioral sciences. To get there, Perz wanted to attend a liberal arts college that knew “what it was about.” He states, “Southwestern had the academic expectations without being pretentious. It was a sincere place. This place let me follow my nose.” Perz’s path led him to in-depth study of several research topics, including animal behavior, social demography and environmental change in the Amazon.

Jill Anderson ’92 knew nothing about Southwestern before she received a letter from the Admission Office. “I was a financial aid kid. Southwestern was just perfect. It welcomed good students, regardless,” she says. After three to four majors, Anderson settled upon psychology. “I knew that I wanted to work with people.” Anderson’s bachelor’s degree in psychology led to her doctorate in developmental psychology and to her current position as the director of Hope for Houston, a faith-based outreach program designed to assist low-income families in the Houston area.

Yes, accounting majors do use Blue Books. At least at Southwestern they do, and that’s one aspect of her education for which Lisa Smith Gildon ’92 is grateful.

[Image] Tulia: Race, Cocaine, and Corruption in a Small Texas Town
Tuesday, January 17, 2006

Those familiar with the travesty of justice that led to multiple bogus drug arrests in the small Texas town of Tulia only from newspaper accounts will be outraged anew at this eye-opening narrative that bears comparison to such courtroom and litigation classics as A Civil Action. This devastating indictment of the toll taken by the war on drugs, viewed through the prism of one small community, is a masterpiece of true crime writing.

McKinney, a communication major from Dallas, who got his first guitar at age six, had never written a song before that fateful summer. But when the muse came, it was as prolific as any a Southwestern summer has ever seen.

Cheles Rhynes '92 left Southwestern University with aspirations of a performing career in the theatre. What he has found since then, however, is that his artistic impact on a production can be as great--or even greater--on the other side of the spotlight.

The invitation from Southwestern President Jake Schrum to join the Alumni Self Study Committee came as a surprise to Southwestern University alumna Cullen Lutz. "I felt honored, but at the same time I was concerned that my lack of previous involvement as an alumna would limit my ability to contribute," she says. "But I was assured they were looking for diverse perspectives. It has turned out to be a wonderful learning experience for me."
