Aimee Gerrard-Morris '99 By Eric Van Danen Monday, August 23, 2004
After completing a challenging program in child study and language development at Southwestern, Aimee Gerrard '99 began working at Copperfield Elementary in Pflugerville ISD as a special education teacher for students with learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and emotional disturbance.
Two years later, she recognized a need to work with the same kind of students in a different setting. So, she enrolled in UT-Austin's Ph.D. program in school psychology. She is currently in the fourth year of the six-year program.
"I have had the opportunity to pursue my research interests of social competence in children with various disabilities. I'm particularly interested in children who have nonverbal learning disabilities."
Last summer, she presented research at the American Psychological Association (APA) in Toronto. This summer, she'll present at the APA conference in Hawaii. Her doctoral program has provided her with "many therapeutic and psychological assessment practicum opportunities, including a couple which have allowed me to return to my old college town. "
Following practicum experiences at a few Georgetown schools, Gerrard-Morris will participate in another practicum this coming academic year at Georgetown Intervention Services.
Outside of her doctoral studies, she works part-time for a local psychologist administering psychological assessments and enjoys spending time with her husband, Todd, and their five animal companions.
