One on One Friday, September 01, 2006 My name is Betty Jasperson Smith '52 and this is my Southwestern story.
It doesn't sound so unusual now, but back in the '50's when I was student on this campus, I was priveledged to take a course from Dr. Claude Howard on creative writing. I had never done anything like this before, but somehow I was inspired to try it. We went to Dr. Howard's home one evening a week. There were about eight who sat around on the floor in his living room. He had us writing and reading aloud our poetry each evening and he would critique our creativeness. He made me feel at home and encouraged us, even me, who had never written poetry, and gave us an experience that I'm sure all of us cherish. S.U. has always been on the cutting edge, and students today are getting this special one on one attention from some of the finest teachers, who really care. HOORAY Southwestern ! |
