A Dog, A Girl and a Professor Thursday, August 31, 2006 My name is Lou Birdwell Parris '56. This is my Southwestern story.
One morning as we congregated at the Tavern across from the Ad Building, we saw a stray dog hit by a car. Seeing he was injured, but not fatally, I prevailed upon my steady boyfriend, Bill Engvall '55, to help me take him to a veterinarian. The vet set the dog's broken leg - and then I realized I had completely cut my American history class! This was in the days when roll was taken, and cuts were frowned on sternly. The next class session I shamefacedly explained to Dr. George C. Hester what had happened. Instead of chastising me, he reached into his pocket and pulled ot a $10 bill saying, "You'll be needing some help in paying the vet." The dog, christened "However," became the Kappa Sig dog, and I got an unforgettable insight into the relationship of Southwestern's faculty to its students." |
