Rev. Martin Gutzmer, Galva, Ill., served the United Methodist Church for 35 years in the New Mexico Conference, the Rocky Mountain Conference and the Central Illinois Conference. He and his wife, Anne, are retiring to a small farm in Bishop Hill, Ill., where they have honeybees, grapevines and many other interests.
Over the past year, both Paul and Patty Bell earned distinguished awards reserved for the most respected educators in their fields. Last March, Patty was honored at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., with the National Science Foundation's Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. In November, Paul won the Pennock Distinguished Service Award for meritorious and outstanding achievement at Colorado State University.
When asked to pinpoint the single greatest contributing factor to his success, this year's Southwestern University Distinguished Alumnus does not hesitate. "I believe you reap what you sow in this world," says Larry Haynes, class of 1972. "I have always tried to focus on how I can help other people, rather than on how other people can help me. In doing this, I have been enriched beyond measure internally, as well as blessed with more than my fair share of external successes."
