Dr. Edward R. Sherwood, Galveston, serves as director of the M.D.-PhD. combined degree program. Dr. Sherwood is professor and vice chair for research in the department of anesthesiology and holder of the James F. Arens endowed chair in anesthesiology. He also holds a joint appointment in the department of microbiology and immunology. Highly praised for his teaching, Dr. Sherwood received the James F. Arens Award for Excellence in Teaching from the residents in the department of anesthesiology. He is well known for his research on the immune response after burn injury and sepsis, and his contributions have led to the discovery of new treatment modalities for the critically injured and septic patient. He has an outstanding publication record and been continuously funded for his work, with current awards from the NIH and Shiners’ of North America. In addition to his scientific accomplishments, Dr. Sherwood is active as a clinician, providing care for critically injured burn patients. He has been listed in the Best Doctors in America (2007-2008).
As the President and Chief Executive Officer of Goodwill Industries of Houston and also the Executive Director of the Goodwill Industries of Houston Foundation, Steve Lufburrow '81 certainly holds his share of responsibilities. In addition to these, Steve devotes his time in service to the Houston Galveston Area Council Work Development Board, to which he was appointed by County Judge Robert Eckels. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Better Business Bureau, an Advisory Board Member of the Westview School, and a member of the Advisory Board for Target Hunger, an organization which attempts to combat hunger by providing families the opportunity to become more self-sufficient.
