FEATURED STORIES
Former Southwestern University President William Carrington Finch Remembered
William Carrington Finch, who served as the 11th president of Southwestern University, died June 13 in Nashville, Tenn. He was 98. Finch served as president of Southwestern from 1949 to 1961, guiding the University through a difficult period of declining enrollment and revenue that followed the immediate post-war boom. During his tenure as president, Finch gave Southwestern a consistent sense of direction, focusing attention on the need for a strong and well-paid faculty, a selective student body and improved facilities. A memorial service for Finch was held Saturday, June 16, at the West End United Methodist Church in Nashville. Memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity, Heifer International and Southwestern University. Click here to read more about President Finch.

Southwestern Receives $1 Million Grant to Continue Upward Bound Program
Southwestern University has received a four-year, $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to continue its Upward Bound program. The new grant will cover the period from September 1, 2007, through August 31, 2011. Established in 1999, the Upward Bound program at Southwestern University offers year-round academic support for students who would be the first in their families to attend college. Help Provide Internships for Students
There is a steady increase in the number of Southwestern students seeking internship opportunities to explore their interests and gain valuable experience. This year, students interned with Saturday Night Live, the Office of Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, KPMG, American Heart Association, National Instruments, Texas Parks & Wildlife and many others. Internships continue to serve as an integral part of employer recruiting efforts as well as students' efforts to gain experience in their area of interest, whether it be in the nonprofit, government or corporate sectors. More than 50 percent of graduating seniors complete at least one or more internships while at Southwestern.
The Office of Career Services is always interested in working with alumni and parents to provide internship opportunities to our students. The staff works with faculty to provide academic internships that assist students in seeking academic credit as well as experience to complement their degree program. This year, faculty worked with more than 141 students pursuing academic credit for their internship experience. If you would like information on how Career Services can work with you to provide internships to Southwestern students, please contact 512-863-1671 or internships@southwestern.edu.
