Shilling Lecture Series Features Nobel Peace Prize Recipient Archbishop Desmond Tutu

There will also be an on-campus live simulcast of the lecture in the Alma Thomas Theater. Nobel Peace Prize recipient, activist, educator, and author, the Archbishop Desmond Tutu will speak on Peace and Reconciliation as Southwestern's 2004 Roy and Margaret Shilling lecturer, Friday, March 26, 2004 at 7 p.m. in the Corbin J. Robertson Center. As stated by the Desmond Tutu Peace Centre, Desmond Tutu kept hope alive in the hearts and minds of millions of South Africans during Apartheid with a powerful vision that justice would come, freedom was unstoppable and one-day all South Africans would be free. On May 8, the Class of 2004, will join the ranks of more than 12,000 Southwestern alumni. The 2004 Commencement speaker is Ernesto Nieto '64, founder and President of the National Hispanic Institute. Alumni Identification Cards - Have you gotten yours?
In the first year after launching the Southwestern Alumni Identification Card Program, the Office of Alumni Relations has issued over 400 Alumni ID Cards! Benefits include: free usage of the A. Frank Smith, Jr. Library Center, free usage of the Corbin J. Robertson Recreation and Athletic Center and Howry Tennis Courts (including complimentary towel and equipment checkout); free green fees at the Kurth-Landrum Golf Course and discounts for massage services. Dallas GOLD alumni, don't miss the SU GOLD happy hour planned for next Thursday, March 18, 6-8 p.m. at the Manhattan Bar & Lounge, 3005 Routh Street, Dallas. The Dallas GOLD Happy Hour is being coordinated by David Bauman '99 and Mandy Moore '00. SU Alumni to Perform at Carnegie Hall
More than 100 Southwestern singers including alumni, students and faculty will perform on November 24, 2004 at New York City's Carnegie Hall. Recognizing Faculty Retirements - Jan Dawson
At the end of the academic year, Jan Dawson, Professor of History will retire from Southwestern. As a lasting reminder of Dr. Dawson’s contribution to the Southwestern community, the University will present a box of personal notes from former students and colleagues to her at the end of the semester. Should you wish for your note to be included, please indicate that it is for Dr. Dawson’s retirement and mail it by April 16 to: the Office of Alumni Relations, PO Box 770, Georgetown, TX 78627-0770.
Pirate Athletics Update
The Southwestern Spring Intercollegiate Athletic Teams have successfully started their 2004 seasons. The Pirate Baseball team is currently 7-4 with their next home game against rival Trinity University, Saturday, March 13 at 1 p.m. This year is especially remarkable for the Pirate Baseball team because it marks the last year of Coach Jim Mallon's distinguished coaching career at Southwestern.
Last week, the SU Men's and Women's Tennis Teams had tough matches against conference teams Trinity and Rhodes Universities. The Pirate Men are 1-4 for the year and the Pirate Women are 2-3. The Pirate Tennis Teams play Thursday, March 11 at 4 p.m., against Texas Lutheran in Georgetown.
The Southwestern Track team had a successful meet at the Trinity Invitational March 6, with Jessica Scheider running a personal best in the 5000 meter (19:25:34) and Clifton Barnes with a personal best in the 400 Meter (51.24). For more athletic news visit www.southwestern.edu/athletics.

Career Services is looking for alumni willing to motivate, encourage and inform seniors about the job search process! Career Services seeks four or five alumni to help with a new event -- a last-chance-before-graduation Job Search Strategies workshop for seniors -- taking place Wednesday, May 5, from 2-4 p.m. Help give advice on resume writing, interviewing, networking or other job search strategies.
