Thinking Ahead: The Southwestern Campaign Kickoff
The public launch of
Thinking Ahead: The Southwestern Campaign, a comprehensive fundraising effort guided by Southwestern's
Strategic Plan for 2010, will take place March 31, during a gala kickoff event. The campaign's purpose is to support the priorities of the University, with specific objectives to increase funds available for faculty and student support, secure the endowment for the
Paideia Program, build or renovate several facilities and fund other priorities in the
Strategic Plan for 2010. The March 31 event will begin with the Roy and Margaret Shilling Lecture at 2 p.m. (See below.) The Campaign Kickoff Gala begins at 7 p.m. with a reception in the Red & Charline McCombs Campus Center. The gala dinner and program will begin at 8 p.m. in a tent on the Roy H. Cullen Academic Mall. Dress for the occasion is business attire. Formal invitations for the gala were mailed early this month. The RSVP deadline was March 17, but if you want to attend, please call June Cody at 512-863-1483 today.
The Roy and Margaret Shilling Lecture
Thomas H. Kean, the former New Jersey governor who was selected by President George W. Bush to chair the 9/11 Commission, will give the
2006 Roy and Margaret Shilling Lecture at Southwestern University titled "9/11 and the War on Terror - Looking Forward." Dec. 16, 2002, Kean was named by President Bush to head the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States, which became known as the 9/11 Commission. The Commission's work culminated July 22, 2004, with the release of the 9/11 Commission Report, which quickly became a national bestseller. Its recommendations resulted in the largest intelligence reform in the nation's history. Kean currently serves as the chairman of the 9/11 Public Discourse Project, a nonprofit entity created with private funds to continue the Commission's work of guarding against future attacks. The lecture will be held March 31, at 2 p.m. in the Corbin J. Robertson Center. A reception will follow the lecture in the Red & Charline McCombs Campus Center. The 2006 Shilling Lecture complements the kickoff for Southwestern University's
Thinking Ahead fundraising campaign. Earlier this month, Southwestern mailed a special invitation with instructions about how to obtain tickets for the Shilling Lecture and the
Thinking Ahead kickoff event. Seating for the Shilling Lecture is limited.

Hurricane Relief Update
Students from Southwestern University joined hundreds of college students from across the country who spent their spring break helping rebuild areas along the Gulf Coast that were destroyed by hurricanes last fall. Eleven Southwestern students and two staff members went to Long Beach, Miss., March 11-18, to assist with the
Episcopal/Lutheran Relief Effort. The students spent the week rebuilding houses.

The Williamson County Sun Receives First Georgetown College Award
Southwestern presented its first-ever Georgetown College Award to
The Williamson County Sun. The award was created this year to recognize citizens, organizations or businesses that have worked to make Georgetown seem more like a college town. "Traditionally, Georgetown has been thought of as a town with a college in it, but not a 'college town,'" said President Jake B. Schrum. "For many years,
The Williamson County Sun has made Southwestern University feel like it is part of this town and that Georgetown is a college town." Linda Scarborough and Clark Thurmond, the co-owners and co-publishers of the paper, accepted the award Feb. 17, at a ceremony held during halftime of the men's basketball game featuring Southwestern versus Centre College.
