Merriman Morton ’63 Named Chair of Board of Trustees
Merriman Morton ’63, a longtime leader in the Texas banking industry, has been named the new chair of the Southwestern University Board of Trustees. Morton has been a member of the Board since 1987 and has served as co-vice chair of the Board since 1996. He is one of three co-chairs for
Thinking Ahead: The Southwestern Campaign. Morton replaces Houston businessman Jim Walzel, who has served as Board chair for the past six years. Read the entire story at

Are You Thinking Ahead?
March 31, Southwestern University launched the largest fundraising campaign in its 166-year history - a $125 million comprehensive campaign designed to fund priorities in the University's Strategic Plan for 2010. These initiatives fall into four broad categories, including supporting students, supporting faculty, diversity enrichment and enhancing the living/learning environment on campus.
Thinking Ahead:
The Southwestern Campaign will run through June 30, 2009. University officials announced that they raised more than $53 million of the campaign goal during the "quiet phase" of the campaign, which began July 1, 2002. In March, the Austin Business Journal wrote about The Southwestern Campaign.

Celebrate the Careers of Retiring Faculty
Walt Herbert, professor of English, Fred Hilgeman, professor of chemistry, and Sonia Riquelme, professor of modern languages, will retire at the conclusion of the Spring 2006 semester. They will be honored during a reception and program Thursday, April 27, from 5-7 p.m. in the Julie Puett Howry Center. Enjoy food, beverages and music by the Post-Hole Diggers while celebrating the contributions these individuals have made at Southwestern. Questions may be directed to

Honoring Bill and Lucy Finch
In honor of former President William Carrington Finch and his wife Lucy Finch a tea will be held May 15, at 3:30 p.m. in the Bishops Memorial Lounge, Red & Charline McCombs Campus Center. Stephanie Fabritius Accepts Position at Centre College
Stephanie Fabritius, associate provost and director of the Paideia® Program, has been appointed to the position of vice president of academic affairs and dean of the college at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Fabritius joined the Southwestern University faculty in 1988 and joined the Southwestern administration in 2003. Her appointment at Centre College will begin July 1, 2006.
Four Philanthropists Receive Southwestern University Medal
Four philanthropists of Southwestern University have received one of the University's highest honors - the Southwestern University Medal. The medals are given for contributions to the University, either through service or philanthropy. The recipients were James V. Walzel, Elizabeth Perkins Prothro and Robert and Ruby Priddy.

Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
The Southwestern University Hall of Fame honors those persons who have made significant contributions in the field of athletics at Southwestern University.

Opera Singer Weston Hurt ’99 Performs
The Sarofim School of Fine Arts' Music Department, presents baritone
Weston Hurt ’99 in concert Thursday, April 20, at 7 p.m at First United Methodist Church, Georgetown, Texas. Hurt will be accompanied by Professor of Music Kiyoshi Tamagawa. Houston Association Hosts "An Evening at the Alley"
Houston alumni, are you looking for a special night out downtown? The Houston Association of Southwestern University Alumni might have the answer for you! May 21, the Houston Association officers invite alumni to attend "An Evening at the Alley," including tickets to Agatha Christie's
Witness for the Prosecution, performed at the
Alley Theatre (615 Texas Avenue, Houston). A reception, held in the Alley Theatre's Terrance Room, will begin at 5:30 p.m., while the production will begin at 7:30 p.m.
"An Evening at the Alley" includes heavy hor d'oeurves, alcoholic beverages, a private tour of the Alley Theatre and your performance ticket. Tickets that feature premium seating cost $70 per ticket, while tickets that feature standard seating cost $50 per person. Tickets are limited so call today! Aldersgate Day to be Celebrated
Aldersgate Day commemorates John Wesley's "heart-warming" experience at Aldersgate Church in London in 1738. In honor of the 268th anniversary of Aldersgate Day,
Henry Holloway ’50 has coordinated a celebration for Wednesday, May 24, in the Lois Perkins Chapel at Southwestern University. The celebration will begin with coffee in the Arthur and Evie Jo Wilson Chapel Plaza at 9:30 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. presentation of “Fathers in the Faith” by
Norman Spellmann ’49, professor
emeritus of religion and philosophy. Guests will break for lunch at 11:30 a.m. A lunch buffet will be served in the Pirate’s Cove located on the lower level of the Red & Charline McCombs Campus Center for $4 per person. Following lunch,
Ellsworth Peterson ’55, professor

Day of Service Scheduled in New York City and Houston
Interested in community service? Both New York City and Houston alumni will conduct a Day of Service April 22. New York alumni have taken on a project with “New York Cares: Hands on New York," while the Houston Association of Southwestern University Alumni is coordinating alumni to volunteer with one of two projects at the Houston Food Bank or the Shell Houston Open. If you are interested in volunteering April 22, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at

Located directly across the street from the Roy and Lillie Cullen (Ad) Building, in the San Gabriel House Bed and Breakfast, the Hospitality House will be open so that you have a place to meet your old friends and make new ones. Apply for the James Robert Andrews Endowed Fellowship
The
James Robert Andrews Endowed Fellowship was established by family and friends of
James Robert "Jim Bob" Andrews ’04, in memory of his strength, courage, determination and intellectual curiosity. This fellowship was created to assist other Southwestern University alumni in their quest to earn a graduate degree. The fellowship of $1,500, may be used to fund a portion of educational costs including tuition, fees, living expenses, books and other required fees. Alumni applicants must have graduated within the last two years from Southwestern University. Hurry! Applications are due April 21.

Attend the second Peanut Butter 'n "Jam" session for 2006! Held in the Alumni Center, Peanut Butter 'n "Jam" sessions allow the Southwestern community to enjoy the sounds of our musically talented alumni and students, while enjoying a complimentary peanut butter and jam sandwich. Friday, April 28, at noon,
Eric Hanke ’01 will perform.

Professor Dirk Early to Prepare Report on Poverty
Selected by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Dirk Early, professor of economics, will prepare a report that will help government agencies more accurately determine the number of people living in poverty in the United States.

New Found Glory to Perform at Southwestern
Punk-rock band
New Found Glory will be the featured band at Southwestern University's first-ever large act concert April 20. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Corbin J. Robertson Center. Tickets for alumni and non-students cost $12. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit hurricane-relief efforts at
Caritas of Austin.
