"Looking at hiring? Take a look at English majors"
President Jake B. Schrum wrote an op-ed piece titled "Looking at hiring? Take a look at English majors" for the
Austin Business Journal. Here is a short blurb from Schrum's article... It's graduation time, and the rush is on to hire college graduates whose majors nicely fit the fields where they intend to make their marks. As a college president, I am grateful that America needs students who are graduating with degrees in fields such as business and engineering. However, I'd like to propose another idea: Hire English majors as well...

A Message for the Class of 1956
“There is nothing so surprising as to realize it has been fifty years since you graduated from Southwestern. If you have not visited the campus during those years, you are in for a real eye-opener and a pleasant one at that. New buildings, new courses, a lot new to Georgetown, new faculty – and it all blends to create a new Southwestern – but a Southwestern that still holds the old spirit and stirs familiar feelings. This Homecoming, Nov. 3-5, will be a time when those of us who graduated in 1956 will be celebrating another milestone in our journey. What we have become and what we have done in those intervening years began at Southwestern to a great extent. When I first met with the reunion planning committee, I realized how much I had missed by not staying in touch all these years. That was a meeting with only five people. I can hardly wait to see the rest of you at Homecoming.” –
Ed Silliman ’56, Class Reunion Planning Committee.

CAMPUS HIGHLIGHTS
Southwestern to Host Conference on Business and the Liberal Arts
Southwestern received a $50,000 grant from the
James S. Kemper Foundation to host a national conference that will focus on ways to improve the business programs offered at liberal arts colleges. The conference will be held Nov. 9-10, 2006. Program chair Mary Grace Neville, an assistant professor of business, says that the world of business has changed rapidly in the past 20 years but business programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level are not adequately preparing students for these changes. She says liberal arts colleges such as Southwestern are the perfect place for students to learn the interconnectedness between business and the larger global society.
