In the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, members of the Southwestern community have demonstrated what it truly means to be a part of a community, especially a "liberal arts community whose values and actions encourage contributions toward the well-being of humanity." Alumni, parents, friends, and especially students have stepped forward to offer assistance to those who have lost so much during this time.
This message board is to provide members of the SU community a means to offer and request additional assistance during this tragic time in the Gulf Coast areas. Please e-mail your request to alumni@southwestern.edu. In your e-mail include how you would like to be contacted (i.e., phone or e-mail). Please note that your information will be made available to all that view this website. The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations will update this website on a regular basis so that you, as members of the SU community, can maintain contact with one another. Please contact the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations at 1-800-960-6363.
Needs:
It's not so much a "need," but it would be a great gift to our hurricane relief community: a COMMERCIAL ESPRESSO MACHINE. "Camp Coast Care" (a Lutheran-Episcopal Relief Effort on the coast of Mississippi) serves about 1200 victims a day: food, clothing, medical attention, house repair, tree removal, etc. We have about 100-150 volunteers each day. We provide them with 3 meals a day. Although it is not a necessity, a nice rich latte or creamy chai tea would be just the inspiration they need in the morning. I've worked as a barrista in a coffee shop in a past job and know how to operate and do basic upkeep on espresso machines. Because of the quantity of people for whom we will be making espresso, the machine would need to be commercial size. If you have one you can donate or know someone who does or would like to buy one as a gift, please contact Lee Livingston '02, at (512) 924-5746 or e-mail at vleelivingston@hotmail.com.
